Hegemony

When:

Lookups spiked on April 26, 2011, after the publication of an interview with Chinese Premiere Wen Jiabao.

Why:

"Even when China becomes a developed country one day," said Wen, "[It] will never seek hegemony."

In recent decades, hegemony – which means "dominant influence or control over others" – has been a term more often associated with the United States.

It comes from a Greek word that means "to lead."
