: any of the fibers extending from the odontoblasts into the alveolar canals : a dentinal fiber—called also Tomes' process

Biographical Note for TOMES' FIBER

Tomes, Sir John (1815–1895), British dental surgeon. Tomes did much during his career to upgrade the practice of dentistry, working to establish it as a profession and to ensure the proper education and registration of its practitioners. Between 1849 and 1856 he wrote a series of important papers on bone and dental tissues, and in 1850 he described Tomes' fibers.
