Definition of RINNE'S TEST

: a test for determining a subject's ability to hear a vibrating tuning fork when it is held next to the ear and when it is placed on the mastoid process with diminished hearing acuity through air and somewhat heightened hearing acuity through bone being symptomatic of conduction deafness

Biographical Note for RINNE'S TEST

Rinne, Heinrich Adolf R. (1819–1868), German otologist. Rinne engaged in private medical practice before accepting a position at a public asylum. He published a notable work on the vocal organs and the development of speech in 1850. In 1855 in a treatise on the physiology of the human ear he introduced Rinne's test for hearing loss.
