Rog·ers \ˈräj-ərz\ , Carl Ransom (1902–1987), American psychologist. Rogers originated an approach to psychotherapy emphasizing a person-to-person relationship between the therapist and the client. The client determines the course, speed, and duration of treatment. He first presented his views on psychotherapy in an article in 1940, and two years later he elaborated on his concepts in Counseling and Psychotherapy. Rogers proposed that a client could find the means to restructure his or her life by establishing a relationship with an understanding therapist. He went on to establish a counseling center at the University of Chicago where he put his theories into practice. In 1951 and 1954 he published two more volumes that presented his theories on psychotherapy and his clinical findings.
