  1. :  either of two small areas of sensory hair cells in the ear located in the saccule (macula sacculi \-ˈsak-yə-ˌlī\ play ) and in the utricle (macula utriculi \-yu̇-ˈtrik-yə-ˌlī\ play ) that are covered with gelatinous material on which are located crystals or concretions of calcium carbonate and that are associated with the perception of equilibrium
