Definition of KUPFFER CELL

: a fixed macrophage of the walls of the liver sinusoids that is stellate with a large oval nucleus and the cytoplasm commonly packed with fragments resulting from phagocytic action

Biographical Note for KUPFFER CELL

Kupffer, Karl Wilhelm von (1829–1902), German anatomist. Kupffer described the large stellate cells in the lining of the sinusoids of the liver first in 1876 and again in 1899. His observations led to a better understanding of the mononuclear phagocyte system.
