Medical Definition of HEPATITIS D VIRUS

:  a subviral particle lacking the protein coat and the surface antigens of the hepatitis B virus that is unable to invade cells except in the presence of the hepatitis B virus and together with this virus causes hepatitis D—called also delta agent, delta virus
