: an age classification of blood granulocytes and especially neutrophils that is based on the number of lobes of the nucleus with increasing lobulation regarded as indicative of increasing age—see shift to the left, shift to the right; compare schilling index

Biographical Note for ARNETH INDEX

Arneth, Joseph (1873–1955), German physician. Arneth specialized in hematology and wrote several studies of diseases of the blood. He introduced the Arneth index in 1904 and advocated its use as a valuable aid in determining the reaction of bone marrow to infectious agents.
