Troland was a university instructor of psychology and a practical engineer. He devised most of the photographic and mechanical apparatus for color motion pictures. In 1922 he wrote a monograph summarizing the current state of visual science. In 1929 and 1930 he published a major two-volume treatise on the principles of psychophysiology.
