Metzenbaum scissorsMain Entry: Met·zen·baum scissors Pronunciation: \ˈmet-sən-ˌbȯm-, -ˌbau̇m-\ Function: noun : surgical scissors having curved blades with blunt ends Metzenbaum, Myron Firth (1876–1944), American surgeon. Metzenbaum specialized in oral surgery and reconstructive surgery of the head and neck. His many papers included descriptions of his methods for the reconstruction of the nose and larynx. His original surgical methods included one for resetting the dislocated nasal cartilage in young children. He also developed a method for administering ether as an anesthetic, and he was a pioneer in the inducement of twilight sleep in patients undergoing general surgery. Metzenbaum is also remembered for his original research on radium.
