Frequently Asked Questions
  • What's this all about?
It's partly a photo contest, partly a word challenge. We're looking for photos and definitions that come together in a thought-provoking, clever, or humorous way. We hope you have fun with it. (By the way, you can see some sample entries on the contest home page.)
  • Is there a particular definition I need to use?
Yes, for this contest we're looking for photos that in some way illustrate our definition of serendipity: "the faculty or phenomenon of finding agreeable things not sought for."
  • How many entries can I submit?
No limit – as many as you'd like.
  • Will all entries get published on Merriam-Webster.com?
Our editors will select top entries to be published on Merriam-Webster.com. We'll email you in advance if your entry is selected.
  • What are the prizes?
The top entry will be awarded a $150 gift certificate at Amazon.com. The next three best entries will receive any item they choose from the Merriam-Webster Shop. The rest of the top entries will be featured on Merriam-Webster.com, where a very large audience will see and admire your work.
  • What's the deadline?
Your entry must be submitted by July 30, 2013, at 11:59 p.m. U.S. Eastern Time.
  • When will the winners be announced?
A week after the deadline, above, the winners and other top entries will appear on Merriam-Webster.com.
  • Where can I see the full rules?
Please see our Contest Rules here.
