  • What's this all about?
    It's partly a photo contest, partly a word challenge. We're looking for photos and definitions that come together in a thought-provoking, clever, or humorous way. We hope you have fun with it. (By the way, you can see some sample entries on the contest home page.)
  • Is there a particular definition I need to use?
    Yes, for this contest we're looking for photos that in some way illustrate our definition of serendipity: "the faculty or phenomenon of finding agreeable things not sought for."
  • How many entries can I submit?
    No limit – as many as you'd like.
  • Will all entries get published on
    Our editors will select top entries to be published on We'll email you in advance if your entry is selected.
  • What are the prizes?
    The top entry will be awarded a $150 gift certificate at The next three best entries will receive any item they choose from the Merriam-Webster Shop. The rest of the top entries will be featured on, where a very large audience will see and admire your work.
  • What's the deadline?
    Your entry must be submitted by July 30, 2013, at 11:59 p.m. U.S. Eastern Time.
