Oman, Gulf of (Concise Encyclopedia)
Northwestern arm of the Arabian Sea, between the eastern part of the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. It is about 200 mi (320 km) wide and 350 mi (560 km) long and connects with the Persian Gulf through the Strait of Hormuz. It is the only entrance to the Persian Gulf from the Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean and is important as a shipping route for the oil-producing area around the Persian Gulf.
