Lepontine Alps
(Concise Encyclopedia)Segment of the central Alps along the Italian-Swiss border. It is bordered by the Pennine Alps in the west and southwest and the Italian lake district in the south; its highest peak, Mount Leone, rises to 11,657 ft (3,553 m) and lies at its western end. Important passes include Simplon, Saint Gotthard, Lukmanier, and San Bernardino.
