borrowed from New Latin, from Greek kŷphos "hump, protuberance" (derivative of kȳphós "bent forward, hunchbacked") + Latin -ōsus -ose entry 1; so called from a double hump between the mouth and dorsal fin of the type specimen, probably a deformity
