borrowed from German Androsteron, from andro- andro- + Sterol sterol + Keton ketone

Note: The name was introduced by the German biochemist Adolph Butenandt (1903-95) and his co-worker Kurt Tscherning in "Über Androsteron, ein krystallisiertes männliches Sexualhormon. I. Isolierung und Reindarstellung aus Männerharn," Zeitschrift für physiologische Chemie, Band 229 (1934), pp. 167-84.
