Nuku'alofa

Town (pop., 2006 prelim.: city, 23,438; urban agglom., 34,058), capital, and chief port of Tonga. Located on the northern shore of Tongatapu Island in the southern Pacific Ocean, it has a deep-draft harbour that is protected by reefs. Commercial activities centre on the export of copra and bananas. Landmarks include the 19th-century royal palace, a chapel, and royal tombs.
