Maktum dynasty

Maktum dynasty

Ruling family of the emirate of Dubayy (Dubai) of the United Arab Emirates. One of the two members of the Al Bu Falasah family to emigrate from Abu Zaby to Dubayy in 1833 was Bati ibn Suhayl, father of Maktum ibn Bati, the first ruler of Dubayy (r. 1833–52). Since that time, the family has played a central role in the leadership of the emirate. The Maktum are a branch of the same Banu Yas confederation that includes the Al Nahyan, rulers of Abu Zaby. In the 1960s members of the Al Maktum and Al Nahyan cooperated to lay the groundwork for self-rule in what would become the United Arab Emirates.
