geographical nameCity (pop., 2002: 149,180), Tanzania. Designated the national capital since 1974, it awaits complete transfer of official functions from Dar es Salaam, the current capital. Located in a sparsely populated agricultural region at an elevation of 3,720 ft (1,135 m), it is a market centre for the surrounding area. Industries produce wood and furniture, beverages, processed food, soap, and oil.
