flag of Ukraine
The first national flag of Ukraine, adopted in 1848, had equal stripes of yellow over blue and was based on the coat of arms of the city of L'viv. In 1918 the stripes were reversed to reflect the symbolism of "blue skies over golden wheat fields". A red Soviet banner flew from 1949, but it was replaced by the blue-yellow bicolor on Jan. 28, 1992.
