Figurative Meanings of Seamless

Seamless came into the English language in the fifteenth century with a fairly literal meaning: “having no seams” (seam itself signifying “the joining of two pieces (as of cloth or leather) by sewing usually near the edge”). Throughout much of the word’s early history, expecially in the seventeenth century, it was employed by writers to refer to the “seamless coat (or garment)" of Jesus Christ. In modern use, the word usually has the figurative sense “without flaws” or "without interruption" rather than “without seams.”
